Our Giant Spider Web

I planned on blowing off one of my classes today as the middle class had been cancelled and I didn't want to wait around for five hours for my last class. But I still went in for my morning class although I had seriously considered blowing it off too. So there on the classroom door this morning, was a sign that said, "No Class - Professor sick". Well that was a 2½-hour (total) commute for nothing. I was really annoyed.

Showing up early at my friends' house, the door was answered by a sleepy-looking Chris. Renee was still in the shower but they were very gracious and warmly invited me in for a visit. It was very nice to visit with them. We don't see each other so much any more since they left the nest.

This afternoon Tom and I went out to put the "spider web" up in the oak tree for Samhain. Tom climbed the ladder and I staked the ends. After we got 5 strands up we decided that we should have knotted them so that the cross pieces wouldn't slide down with gravity. So we took it apart and started over. Tom climbed the ladder and put the warp strands around a small limb sticking up from the large horizontal main branch and dropped it back down to me. Sometimes we are not the most coordinated of people so this took us about 1½ hours to get that far. Okay we did get a few of the cross pieces tied on too. But we haven't finished it yet. Tomorrow we need to finish it and build the large spider that goes in the web. We just use black garbage bags and fill them with leaves for the body and the head, tape them together, and then roll newspaper in the black bags for the legs. The one we did last year, actually looked pretty good, but it was built from our roof to the ground by the front door. This one is bigger and will be in the middle of the ritual area (grin). We have an all night ritual with bonfire vigil planned. I am looking forward to it.
