A Personal Scare

Saturday September 15, 2001

We had quite a scare today and a tiring day as well. Last night Tom told me that he had developed a large floater in the vision of one eye. He researched various possibilities on the web and we came up with some kind of minor hemorrhage or some retinal detachment, which seemed unlikely. But in the morning he also had flashing lights on the edge of his vision. I was really upset. I began to speculate about not only all the things that might be wrong with it but that he might end up in the hospital, need surgery that we can't afford with no insurance, etc. etc. I called our physician and got the after hours nurse who listened to the symptoms then suggested we go to the immediate care facility but assured me it wasn't an immediate run-right-away situation and we could leisurely take him in today.

F. called and Tom answered and told him that I was emotionally upset and asked him to calm me down since I have such a strong response to him. I didn't expect that at all and was a little embarrassed to have my spouse tell my lover that I needed him to calm me down. On the other hand I suppose I could look at it as a good sign that my spouse accepts my lover that well. However, I think, it might be better for me to not have them spending much time together to exchange notes or I might actually get out numbered :) Anyway, F. did indeed calm me down by asking me to call on my Priestess self and be there for Tom.

In Madison, Tom was looked at - they didn't seem to find a problem so had us stay in town for several hours to wait for the Opthamologist to come in so he could examine Tom. We hung around the mall, wandered around, picked up a few things we needed, window shopped, and just got tired. Then we went back and Tom had 4 kinds of drops put in his eyes and his eyeball was thoroughly examined. The upshot of it all was that this is the normal aging process. The normal aging process!!! Wonderful!!! Sigh… The fluid in the eyeball contracts due to age, it pulls away from the retina, another fluid fills that space, and sometimes there is a squirting of one fluid into the other which creates the floaters. They may or may not ever go away. And during this process it is possible to get retinal tears or a detached retina so it was important to take him in and get it checked out right away as that must be attended to right away. I want a user's manual - there are just too many little things that can go wrong.

Anyway we didn't get any of the things done for Pagan Pride Day tomorrow that we were supposed to get done. We did make a long list of things to take with us when we got home, though.
