Defusion

Wraithcorp

This is the most original and enjoyable Quake mod I've seen, bar none. It's similar to Capture the Flag, but with a huge twist: There's only one flag, and it isn't a flag, it's a bomb that's counting down fast. Rather than random fragging, the focus is on finding the bomb and getting it to the "Rings" where you score before time runs out, which lends this mod an urgency and intensity regular Quake can't match. In a couple hours of play, there were at least three times when I got it to the Rings with a second or less to spare.

The other great thing about Defusion is the new weapons and power-ups. There's three new weapons, none of which are really all that original: The Grapple Launcher, the Chain Shotgun, and the Slide Gun, which fires three grenades at once. Even so, with the exception of the Rocket Launcher, these seemed to be used in preference to the standard Quake weapons.

The power-ups, most of which look like circuit boards, are alot more interesting. Arguably the most original is the Eject-ulator (which people seem to consistently misread as Ejaculator), which causes everyone else's weapons to go flying off in all directions next time you fire. There's also one that increases your firing speed (Called "Revenge," I think), one called "Shield" which I assume effects how much damage you take, and another which creates five shadow versions of yourself, making it difficult for people to aim at you. They've also included all the standard Quake power-ups for you traditionalists, and there may be other new power-ups that I was too distracted to notice.

Another relatively unique feature of this mod is a creature called "the Wraith," which occasionally appears overhead and flies around for awhile spawning ammo boxes, health, and powers-ups before it vanishes again.

There was only one thing I didn't like about Defusion, which is that to run a server for it you have to recompile the regular Quake maps so they'll have the proper entities for bomb spawnpoints etc., but this isn't required to connect to a Defusion server so it didn't bother me too much.

[Note: Though I doubt much of anyone cares since Quake1 is a thing of the past, as far as I can tell (as of spring 2002) Wraithcorp no longer exists, and I have no idea where one could obtain a copy of the Defusion mod.]
